Air Conditioning

Air conditioner and air conditioning units are provided through the removal of heat. Heat can be removed through radiation, convection, or conduction. Refrigeration conduction media such as water, air, ice, and chemicals are referred to as refrigerants. A refrigerant like Freon or better new age 134A is employed either in a heat pump system, ductless air conditioning system or even ducted air conditioning units in which a compressor is used to drive the system. New A/C systems can have very high efficiencies, and are sometimes combined with seasonal thermal energy storage for air conditioning installations. Air conditioning repairs are needed with all systems over time the most reliable ac system by Consumer Reports since 1992 is American Standard, Mitsubishi and Carrier. An air conditioning system, or a standalone air conditioner, provides cooling, ventilation, and humidity control for all or part of a building.

Air Conditioner

Central air conditioner systems with a both an outdoor condenser and evaporator unit are often ducted air conditioning installation systems installed in modern homes, offices, and public buildings, but are a challenge to install in a building that was not designed to receive it because of the larger air ducts required.

An alternative to central systems is the use of separate indoor and outdoor coils in ductless air conditioning or mini split systems. These systems still need air conditioning service, although most often seen in residential applications, are gaining popularity in small commercial buildings. The evaporator coil is connected to a remote condenser unit using refrigerant piping between an indoor and outdoor air conditioner unit instead of ducting air directly from the outdoor unit. Indoor units with directional vents mount onto walls, suspended from ceilings, or fit into the ceiling. Other indoor units mount inside the ceiling cavity, so that short lengths of duct handle air from the indoor unit to vents or diffusers around the rooms.

Cooling

An air conditioning system, or a standalone air conditioner, provides cooling, ventilation, and humidity control for all or part of a building.

Heat Pump

The heat pump can extract heat from the exterior air (air source) or from the ground (ground source). Initially, heat pump HVAC systems were used in moderate climates, but with improvements in low temperature operation and reduced loads due to more efficient homes, they are increasing in popularity in colder climates. Heat pumps can be air to air, air to water, water to air and water to water systems.

Geothermal

A geothermal heat pump or ground source heating and cooling is a central heating and/or cooling system that transfers heat to or from the ground.

It uses the earth as a heat source (in the winter) or a heat sink (in the summer). This geothermal energy pros and cons design takes advantage of the moderate temperatures in the ground to boost efficiency and reduce the operational costs of heating and cooling systems, and may be combined with solar heating to form a geosolar system with even greater efficiency than just geothermal energy.

Ground source heat pumps are also known as “geothermal heating” although, strictly, the heat does not come primarily from the center of the Earth, but from the Sun. Geothermal energy facts, they are also known by other names including geoexchange, earth-coupled, earth energy systems. The engineering and scientific communities prefer the terms “geoexchange” or “ground source heat pumps” to avoid confusion with traditional geothermal power, which uses a high temperature heat source to generate electricity.

Geothermal heating and cooling systems reach fairly high Coefficient of performance (CoP), 3 to 6, on the coldest of winter nights, compared to 1.75-2.5 for air-source heat pumps on cool days.[6] Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are among the most energy efficient technologies for providing geothermal HVAC.

Geothermal cost are higher than for conventional systems, but the difference is usually returned in energy savings in 3 to 10 years, and even shorter lengths of time with federal, state and utility tax credits and incentives. Geothermal heat pump systems are reasonably warranted by manufacturers, and their working life is estimated at 25 years for inside components and 50+ years for the ground loop.[9] As of 2004, there are over a million geothermal system installed worldwide and growing fast.

Air Quality

The use of furnaces, space heaters and boilers as means of indoor heating may result in air pollution with incomplete combustion and the emission of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds, and other combustion byproducts. Incomplete combustion occurs when there is insufficient oxygen; the inputs are fuels containing various contaminants and the outputs are harmful byproducts, most dangerously carbon monoxide which is a tasteless and odorless gas with serious adverse health effects.

Natural ventilation is a key factor in reducing the spread of airborne illnesses such as tuberculosis, the common cold, influenza and meningitis. Opening doors, windows, and using ceiling fans are all ways to maximize natural ventilation and reduce the risk of airborne contagion. Natural ventilation requires little maintenance and is inexpensive. Many owners will also select to have a humidifier and air cleaner installed on their HVAC air quality system.

The primary health concerns associated with indoor air quality is carbon monoxide exposure are its cardiovascular and neurobehavioral effects. Carbon monoxide can cause atherosclerosis; the hardening of arteries, and can also trigger heart attacks. Neurologically, carbon monoxide exposure reduces hand to eye coordination, vigilance, and continuous performance. It can also affect time discrimination. It is always good to have your home air quality tested.
